[medical_billing] Need help with coding scenario
Hi everyone! I'm new to the group, and am scheduled to take my
certification exam in May. As of right now, I'm stumped with a
problem in my coding class. Can anyone help me determine how to
code the following scenario? You don't have to give me the exact
codes... if you could just tell me WHAT to code... that would be a
big help. Thanks for any help you can give me. Here's the scenario:
A 70-year-old woman is evaluated in a clinic for symptoms of
increasing claudication. After noninvasive vascular studies were
performed, the decision was made to proceed with diagnostic
angiography and possible angioplasty of the suspected internal
femoral artery stenosis. After normal preparation for the
angioplasty procedure, the left common femoral artery is punctured
and the catheter is passed proximally into the left internal iliac
artery. Images were then taken to establish and localize the
lesion. The vessel is also measured to determine the size of the
angioplasty balloon. Using the Seldinger technique, the angiography
catheter was removed and an angioplasty catheter with a balloon
diameter of 8mm was advanced into the left internal iliac artery and
into the lesion without difficulty. After two inflations to 8mm,
the follow-up angiography was performed and showed good flow across
the lesion. Pressures measured confirm the adequacy of the therapy
and that there is no residual gradient.
I'm suppose to find the CPT code(s) and ICD-9 code(s). Cardiology
confuses me to start with, and with some things being included with
certain procedures, that's where I get all mixed up. I can't even
figure out the ICD code because she was evaluated for "symptoms
of"....Can anyone advise? Thanks:)
